Photographic diary (May)
Atelier on the road and harsh summer light.
At the beginning of the month, I photographed Des Intresse (a punk band) on the dance floor of De Beatriks. I brought my Atelier on the road, a big hand dyed 6 by 3 (Mtr) cloth that functions as my background. I found the best light: the sun setting through the window. The building, being an old prison, lets in a scarce amount of light. But it was more than enough to create some portraits. Its always a challenge leaving the Atelier and not having the comfort of it. In my Atelier, I know the light and time; the Atelier on the road doesn’t have these luxuries; it challenges me to work quicker.
Talking about the Atelier, this month I portrayed Sandor, someone who’s appearance sparked interest in me. I,am particularly fond of the first photograph. How the light hits the table, his almost surrender, and how his hand is lit up by the light.
An Atelier Diary wouldn’t be complete without writing A love letter to the light. We have come to the point where the light during the height of the day to me is useless. It’s too harsh during these hours; the shadows are my friend in the Atelier. The light peaks through the slightest slit between the curtains blocking this light. Yet the evenings, when the sun has almost set, the light carries a magical quality to it. I especially love how the light hits the water in black and white; it creates a gradient transition from black to white.
I picked up three books this month.
