Photographic diary (June)

Portraits, Poster, Dead bird

This month I had two portrait sessions in the Atelier. Worked on marketing for the portrait session I will do every last Sunday of the month and took plenty of B-side images as shown below. Worked on a few series that I will only show when its finished.

The photograph of the dead bird. The bird died due to the heat wave; this photograph fits perfectly in a series I have been working on for the last two years. “Do birds still sing in hell?“ A series of natura mortas with dead birds as the subject. For some series, I have a lot of influence on how much work I can make. But with this one, I have to wait on finding a new subject to photograph.

There is something poetical about having an animal lie still on my Atelier table that used to be so free it could fly.

Regarding the portraits I took this month, I am especially happy with the full-body portraits. I find full-body portraits harder to make than a close-up. A close-up is always more interesting to see because we never see someone up that close. But with a full body, we see this every day on the street. So if I had to choose between the two, I would always pick a close-up. So I challenged myself to focus more on creating a good full-body portrait.

As always, a love letter to the light.

The summer light is like I wrote in the last two diaries: harsh and useless. This year I had a weapon. A white cloth that covers my window, also very useful against the heat. But even better at diffusing the light like a softbox. U can see the results of this on the portraits of Hessel.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy
