Photographic diary (October)

Paris, Concerts, Exhibitions

Another month filled with photography.

At the beginning of this month, I put up my fourth exhibition, featuring two new works from my ongoing series. There’s simply too much beauty to capture. The exhibition is currently on display at St. Antonius Ziekenhuis in Sneek, and will remain there until the beginning of next year.

As the days grow shorter, the light fades faster, and the shadows stretch longer. Light is always changing or, as I like to say, “The light is always dancing.”

I’ve yet to decide which time of year holds my favorite light, but this season might just be the one. The light now feels different, quick and elusive. It doesn’t slowly creep along my atelier wall; it races. It’s shy. There are only a few days when the sun breaks through and this beautiful light comes out to play. Yet as the light gives way to the darkness of night, new inspiration arrives.

I’ve always found myself more inspired by the night, especially in Paris. During a recent trip for work, I spent several evenings wandering the city, captivated by its nocturnal beauty. The rain, graffiti, and streetlights all combined into something cinematic. While there, I had the chance to see Richard Avedon’s legendary series “In the American West.”

Without a doubt, it’s one of the best photo exhibitions I’ve ever attended.

The series is simple, yet full of character portraits of working-class Americans shot against a clean white backdrop. The people are rough, dirty, and sometimes visibly poor, but to me, they’re far more beautiful than any model Avedon photographed. Each portrait leaves me with countless questions.

What I love most about Avedon’s work is the contrast. He’s famous for his elegant fashion photography clean, refined, “beautiful.” This series is the opposite; this contrast is what intrigues me so much.

Speaking of exhibitions, I’m excited to share that at the end of November, I’ll be participating in a photobook fair at the Rietveldpaviljoen in Amersfoort. I’ll be bringing the last copies of Embracing the Dark, along with three works on display and a new product that will also be available for sale.
